PDP Removes Economist Drabu from Council of Ministers for Gross Indiscipline
In a major Political Development in Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday removed defiant, Jammu and Kashmir Finance Minister Dr Haseeb Drabu, from the Council of Ministers reportedly for “gross indiscipline” days after Dr Drabu termed Jammu and Kashmir merely a social issue in his speech at a Delhi conference.
Haseeb Drabu’s statement did not only draw sharp criticism from opposition parties but his own Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under the leadership of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti.
Talking to www.themandate.net, Sartaj Madni, vice president of the ruling PDP confirmed the development.
Mehbooba according to Madni reminded the party leaders that her party’s basic principle for which the party came into the existence is that Jammu and Kashmir is a political issue which according to a party resolution needs a political solution.
Sartaj Madni said, “While holding the party’s basic agenda supreme Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti without making any compromise took the strictest decision”.
“The “tough action” was necessary to “save the party,” another party leader wishing anonymity said.
Earlier on Sunday, PDP rejecting the controversial views had issued a show cause notice to economist Drabu asking why disciplinary action should not be taken against him.
The economist-turned-politician, Haseeb Drabu received accolades for his constructive role in the successful implementation of the GST from his counterpart at the centre — Arun Jaitley. But with Haseeb Drabu being sacked from his position of the state Finance Minister, he is set to lose his seat in the GST Council as well.
Before joining politics, Haseeb Drabu was a journalist and economist. In 2003, he was appointed as an economic advisor to the then PDP-Congress coalition state government. In 2005, he was appointed as chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Bank.
Known as a loyalist of late PDP supremo Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Haseeb Drabu resigned from the bank’s top post when Omar Abdulla-led Jammu & Kashmir National Conference came to power in 2008. In 2014, he formally joined PDP and won the state election from his home constituency Rajpora.
